Elastic materials with the ability to readily regain their original shape following compression are known as graphene aerogels. Graphene aerogels are also very absorbent due to their low density. More than 850 times the weight of this material can be absorbed. Its ability to absorb spilled material means that the aerogels only need to be removed once the spill has been cleaned up, making it potentially helpful for environmental clean-ups such as oil spills. While extensive study is being conducted on the subject, graphene aerogel may also have some uses in energy transfer and storage by enabling the development of lighter, higher-energy-density batteries.
